5 Reef Fishing Tips you need to know

December 6, 2018smartfish

As with any fishing trip preparation is key to your success. So, check out our handy guide for beginners to find out the five things you need to know if you’re thinking about reef fishing.

Find the right location

Firstly, you’ll need to find a good spot for your reef fishing. Once you’ve chosen a location make sure you have the GPS coordinates so that you can locate it easily.

Choose the right fishing gear

Your fishing line can easily become damaged when fishing over the reef. That’s why we recommend that you use a braided fishing line that will be more resistant to abrasion than your usual monofilament line.

You’ll also need a strong swivel and a large, oval sinker that’s heavy enough to sink your hook with its bait to the bottom of the reef where the fish will be.

Monitor the weather

The weather is an important factor to consider before deciding to go reef fishing. As you’ll need to be able to stay above the reef to fish successfully it’s important to pay attention to the wind speed and the direction of the tide.

Choose the right bait

Live bait such as shrimp, crabs and mullet work really well for reef fishing. If you’re unable to get hold of live bait then fresh cuts of fish also work well. Don’t use bait that has been frozen or has begun to go off.

Find a local guide

Reef fishing can be one of the best and most rewarding experience for a keen fisherman. If you’re new to it then we recommend that you find a guide to take you on your first excursion. This will give you the best chance of a relaxing and successful trip and you’ll have someone on hand to take care of preparations.

Deep End Fishing on the Sunshine Coast are experienced in Reef Fishing Charters and are the best way to experience Deep Sea and Reef Fishing first hand. We’ll even help you clean the fish you catch and provide a packed lunch on the day.

Finally, be patient and enjoy the day on the water. Due to the nature of the reef, there is no guarantee that you’ll find the same abundance of fish in one area in any two days.
